Lagoon Upgrades

Client:
Town of Battleford
Completed in 2022, this $6.4 million project involved major upgrades to the Town of Battleford’s wastewater lagoon system, which had reached the end of its service life and could no longer meet the community’s growing demands. The upgraded system was designed to accommodate projected population growth over a 30-year horizon.

Key improvements included replacing undersized and aging aeration infrastructure, reconfiguring the lagoon’s hydraulic flow for greater treatment efficiency, and constructing new Submerged Attached Growth Reactor (SAGR) cells to enhance effluent quality. The project also included a new Downstream Use and Impact Study for discharge into a nearby fish-bearing river, ensuring environmental compliance. A blower building was designed to house three 100 hp and two 75 hp blowers, along with a modern blower control system, ventilation controls, an electrical room, and dedicated storage space.

A significant challenge arose when the liner of an existing lagoon cell was found to have failed once the cell was taken offline. Working closely with the contractor, our team quickly developed and implemented a repair plan within the constraints of the remaining construction season. The project resulted in a significantly expanded and modernized lagoon system built to reliably serve the Town’s wastewater needs for decades to come.
