Principal Design Engineer

Ryan is a Principal Design Engineer with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, earned in 2008. Emphasizing the importance of reconciliation education and understanding Indigenous cultures and perspectives, Ryan has undertaken Indigenous Awareness training through the First Nations University of Canada.

 

Ryan’s journey with Catterall & Wright began in 2008, joining the team as a Project Engineer and made partner in 2010. As a Principal Engineer and one of the Senior Engineers within the Land Group, he manages people, projects, and business development. Ryan provides guidance, mentorship, and support to employees in developing their skills and achieving their professional goals. 

 

With the experience he has gained in municipal engineering as a project engineer, overseeing projects from inception to completion, Ryan brings a wealth of knowledge to various project aspects, including feasibility studies, asset management studies, infrastructure planning, and design. Ryan approaches each project with a focus on practical solutions that effectively address the unique requirements and limitations of the situation at hand. From design and specifications to tendering and contract administration, his approach is grounded in finding realistic and efficient resolutions that align with project objectives. Areas of practice and expertise include residential, commercial, and industrial land development, storm water management systems, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, sanitary force mains, roadway construction and design, servicing and infrastructure studies, and infrastructure system modelling. 

 

Ryan has contributed to several notable projects in Saskatoon, such as Brighton Phase 7 -11 and the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. Award-winning ventures include the City of Humboldt Sewer Basement Backup Mitigation. This project received the Student Choice Award from the Design Council of Saskatchewan in 2013. It focused on mitigating basement backups in the sewer system of the City of Humboldt. The Optimist Hill Outdoor Recreation project for the City of Saskatoon.  This project was recognized with the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design in 2019. This initiative encompassed the planning and construction of an outdoor recreational facility. Another award-winning project for the City of Saskatoon includes the Saskatoon Interchanges Project. This multi-million-dollar project was a critical transportation priority for the continued growth and development of Saskatoon’s East Side. The project was the recipient of the 2021 Brian Eckel Awards, Award of Excellence, Transportation Category with ACEC-SK.

 

Ryan is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan (APEGS) and maintains Permission to Consult in the field of Municipal Engineering. Ryan is a member with the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada – Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK). Ryan is not only active in his professional endeavours but also contributes to his community; he serves as a board member for the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival and is a committee member for the Saskatoon & Regional Home Builders Association’s Advocacy and Research Committee. Outside of work and community involvement, Ryan enjoys leisure activities. He can often be found on the golf course, indulging in his passion for the sport. He also appreciates spending quality time with his wife and family at the lake, relaxing and enjoying a glass of wine.
